Tai chi taster session for over 55s in New Elgin

A GROUP of over 55s from Moray tried tai chi for the first time at a free taster session.

The fun tai chi class, part of the Royal Voluntary Service's First Time for Everything programme, took place at the New Elgin and Ashcroft Public Hall.

The class is designed to support physical and mental wellbeing, particularly in those that are older and less mobile.

It gives people the opportunity to try something new for free in their local community, and to be social and active.

Originating in China as a martial art, tai chi combines deep breathing with gentle, flowing movements which create a state of calm, which is said to promote wellbeing.

Local instructor Caroline van der Heiden guided participants through the session with gentle physical exercises, stretches and breathing to connect the mind and body, with time for relaxation at the end.

Seated or standing options were available, and refreshments were available after the class.

Janet Jones from Elgin attended the session. She said: “It was such an interesting session and not at all what I had expected. I felt a lot of muscles that most of the time I'm not even aware of.”

The First Time for Everything programme launched in 2017. Since then, thanks to support from Royal Voluntary Service volunteers, more than 700 First Time for Everything events have taken place across Great Britain.

More than 10,000 people have come along to date to try new activities like hot yoga, group singing, open water swimming, forage walking, chocolate making and line dancing.

Laura Chow, head of charities at the People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “Whatever our age, ability or circumstances, getting out and about, being active and feeling part of our local community are incredibly important for our health and wellbeing.

"With generous support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, First Time for Everything brings local people together to have fun, meet new people and enjoy trying something new.”
