TOMINTOUL and Glenlivet have been included in a new map highlighting Scotland’s links to space exploration

The map had been released by VisitScotland in the build-up to the 50th anniversary this Sunday of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

Tomintoul and Glenlivet are featured as they lie within The Cairgorms Dark Sky Park area.

This 25 by 35 mile stretch of land has been designated as one of the very best places in the whole UK to go stargazing.

Amongst the other places featured on the map is Braemar, the Aberdeenshire village which was the birthplace in 1805 of Johann von Lamont.

The eminent Scottish-German astronomer was the first person to calculate the mass of the planet Uranus.

The picture above shows BuzzBò, the first Highland cosmonaut, who lifted off into space this week by weather balloon.

Bò is the Gaelic word for cow.
