Parents came out fighting this week in a bid to save the Elgin Childcare Centre from closure

A GROUP of furious Moray parents are battling to stop a popular childcare centre from closing.

Parents of youngsters attending Elgin Childcare Centre, on Myreside Circle, Elgin, were left stunned on Tuesday when they received letters informing them it will be shutting this summer.

The RAF, which owns and runs the nursery on the northern outskirts of town, has plans to transform it into a community centre for service families who live in the nearby married quarters.

However, after meeting with parents on Wednesday, RAF Lossiemouth Station Commander Group Captain Andy Hine has agreed to to take time to consider their opinions before reporting back to them at a later date.

According to Gp Capt Hine, the RAF made the "difficult" decision due to falling numbers at the centre and an assurance from Moray Council that spaces are available at other nurseries.

Mum Victoria Ingram, however, has described the move as a "slap in ther face".

"How can they take this away from our children? They are robbing our kids," she said. "The RAF has definitely got a fight on its hands."
