A powerlifter in his 70s has smashed a bench press world record in the British championships.

Ash Sinclair (71), who lives on the Black Isle, set the record at the event in Norfolk.

He was competing in the up to 82.5kg class for men aged over 70 years old.

The existing record stood at 118kg but Ash got things rolling with an opening lift of 125kg.

The powerful pensioner ended breaking the record four times on successive lifts, going on to eventually hoist 135kg.

Ash, who's been a keen sportsman all of his life, said: "I’ve been back to competitively powerlifting for the past few years – having done it in my 30s."
