Lossiemouth United football heroes give their reaction to Scottish Junior Cup’s greatest shock result after stunning win over Auchinleck Talbot

The heroes of Scottish junior football’s greatest shock result have become celebrities overnight.

Lossiemouth United were the talk of the country last weekend when they travelled down to Ayrshire and defeated 14-time cup giants Auchinleck Talbot on their own patch.

Manager Scott Campbell, goal scorers Alex Matczak and Jack Macarthur, heroic goalkeeper Stephen Dey and club chairman Alex Lauriston all spoke about the reaction in their own community, and much further afield.

As Campbell tried to get his players’ feet back on the ground at training this week, the buzz was evident around United’s Phoenix Park changing rooms.

The manager revealed how he received a call from a fan of Auchinleck’s big Ayrshire rivals Cumnock, promising him free drink any time he visited their town.

Double scorer Matczak and opening marksman Macarthur described their feelings in a video interview.

And keeper Dey, whose heroics between the sticks kept Talbot at bay, said strangers have been approaching him in shops in Moray to speak about United’s incredible victory.

As for Lauriston, who spearheaded the effort to return his club to the junior ranks in 2022 after a spell in abeyance, he paid tribute to the efforts of the players, management team, committee and club volunteers for helping create a pathway towards United’s finest hour.
