The whisky capital of the world could become home to another distillery.

Chivas Brothers has submitted a proposal to build a new one close to their existing plant at Miltonduff.

The global drinks giant is also looking to build a bio-plant as well as warehouses and offices.

Neal MacPherson, the council's principal planning officer described the development as "substantial" at a meeting yesterday.

The site, which is three miles from Elgin, is the size of about 20 football pitches and stretches from the existing distillery north to Pluscarden Road.

Councillor Amber Dunbar (Elgin North, Conservative) asked for noise levels to be kept in mind as the development borders Miltonduff Village Hall.

Meanwhile, cllr Donald Gatt (Keith and Cullen, Conservative) raised concerns about the impact that extra traffic would have on the transport network.

He said: "This is a substantial site so there is potential for damage or wear and tear on local roads during construction, and the subsequent operation of the development."

Assurances were given that noise and traffic assessments would be carried out as part of the planning process, and a wear and tear agreement would be sought.

Cllr Sonya Warren (Buckie, SNP) stated her hope that Chivas would make the most of the historic Milton Dovecot, which is on the site.

She added: "It’s really good to see a distilling company has the confidence to want to build a new distillery within Moray just now."

Cllr Warren also asked if there was any indication that a visitor centre would be built on the site.

She was advised that it was too early in the planning process to say either way.

Chivas will now consult Heldon Community Council on their proposals.

A public event will also be held in Miltonduff hall.

Comments from these will then be fed back to Chivas before a formal planning application is submitted.
