Poppy Scotland praises Elgin’s fundraiser
The main organiser of the Elgin Poppy Appeal has been given a top honour by the national charity.
David Broadfoot MBE has been the heart and soul of the appeal for many years in Elgin, which raises about £20,000 annually – an amount that tops some much bigger communities.
To celebrate this record of success he has now been handed the President’s Award by Poppy Scotland.
The presentation was made by Rear Admiral Mark Beverstock who said: “Each year David carefully distributes and collects over 300 tins and boxes, while successfully engaging the community in the message behind the poppy.
“In addition to this, he co-ordinates collections at the local supermarkets.
“A founding member of the Scottish Poppy Appeal in Elgin, he is always one step ahead, using his skills and expertise to engage with local youth groups such as the sea and air cadets, Police Scotland’s youth volunteers and the pupils at Gordonstoun school.
“In addition, outside of the appeal, David is progressive and ambitious in his attempts to generate life-changing donations from the community in Moray.
“He is a clear example of a volunteer not resting on his laurels, but willing to go above and beyond.”
David Broadfoot served with the Gordon Highlanders from 1973 to 2006, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
