Pupils from Elgin's East End Primary School collect 40 bags of litter on sponsored walk to Lossiemouth
PUPILS from a Moray primary school gathered around 40 bags of litter during a recent three-hour long sponsored walk.
Primary seven pupils from East End in Elgin walked from their school to Lossiemouth's East Beach on Friday, May 19, picking up litter.
The group of 22 pupils were also raising funds for their end-of-year activities during the walk, with more than £250 raised through sponsorship.
P7 teacher Mark Hopkirk said: "The pupils couldn't believe how much rubbish was lying about.
"They were really enthusiastic about doing something community-based and were glad that people could see they were helping out.
"We had a good talk about the impact of litter and the effect it has on the environment.
"The pupils noticed that there was far more litter on the first part of the walk – in and around Elgin – but there wasn't as much in Lossie."
The money raised by the pupils is set to be put towards trips to the cinema, as well as hosting activities at Roseisle Beach, before they all head off to either Elgin Academy or High School.
Mr Hopkirk thanked Highland Industrial Supplies (HIS), who provided litter picking equipment, Outfit Moray, who provided transport back from Lossiemouth, and Miele's, who provided discounted ice cream.
"The kids were delighted with the ice cream," he added. "HIS and Outfit Moray were so supportive and we are thankful for their help."
