COMMUNITY spirit is alive and kicking in Elgin as volunteers for Ladyhill Gardens will be able to continue their work after an outpouring of public support.

Last week, The Northern Scot reported how the volunteers would have to give up with Moray Council set to charge them £144 for the use of four brown bins.

However, the Ladyhill Flowerbed Group will continue their work on the council-owned grounds for a few more years to come.

Anne Glover, who is leading the fight, said: “The response has been absolutely amazing, it has all happened so fast.

“I am absolutely disgusted with the council. We do a lot of work and we get no support.”

Moray Council stated last week that there would be no exceptions to the £36 charge for each garden waste bin.

For the next year the payment of the bins has been made by local business, Elgin Orchard Ltd.

There has also been offerings from other local businesses such as skip hire company, J Gordon Williamson Ltd willing to empty the bins for free.

Others have also given money to pay for the equipment, which the group have done out of their own pocket since they started almost 10 years ago.

There has also been money from a crowdfunding page set up by the members of the Elgin – Past to Present Facebook Group.

The goal of £144 has almost doubled with £245 raised on the Go Fund Me page in the first three days of it being set up.

Money has been even donated in an envelope through Anne’s letterbox.

She hopes to set up a public fund to allow for the group to continue its work long term.
