In the 76th running of the event, George Evans broke the world record in the 56lb height event – in which competitors have to throw a 56 pound stone over a bar which is behind them.

Mr Evans threw the stone 15 foot and 3 inches, smashing the previous record of 15 foot, set by Kyle Randalls in Aboyne three years ago. The record is still to be ratified.

And he wasn’t the one record breaker, with Sinclair Patience breaking the ground record in the 28lb distance. Competitors have to throw a 28 pound ball as far as possible – with Mr Patience throwing the ball 76.2 inches, beating the previous ground record of 75.1 inches, set in 2015.

The official games attendance was 4,600, with plenty of foreign visitors – who took part in a haggis hurling competition.

Games Secretary Brian Cameron said: “The weather was fantastic and the games bring in lots of tourists – as well as locals returning home. The Games come right in the middle of tourist season so it was pretty much a capacity crowd for us.”
