THE return of the Elgin Highland Games has fallen through due to a lack of volunteers, organisers have confirmed.

The games were scheduled to return for the first time since 2004 but were cancelled yesterday (July 3) just one week before they were set to go ahead.

Organisers, in a statement posted on social media, said: "Today we should have been getting the final parts of the games together for what we hoped would have been a great event next Sunday but unfortunately with new commitments within the original committee and a lack of interest in joining the committee from anywhere else it's not to be."

Organisers had tried to revive the games twice previously, in 2020 and 2021, but had to cancel their plans as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The last games were held on Morriston Road playing fields in 2004 but the history of the event stretches back to at least 1880 when over 2000 people watched them in a field in Ashgrove.

Organisers added: "Hopefully some more people with an interest in joining the committee will step forward for next year so we can get this event off the ground."
