ROTHES Primary School said goodbye to its most loyal staff member at Christmas, as Irene Duncan left after 30 years working as office administrator.

The Northern Scot was invited along to a surprise gathering for Mrs Duncan, where a hall full of pupils, including two of her granddaughters, surprised her with songs and poems.

Many of the children were left in tears at their favourite staff member leaving – but Mrs Duncan said she will be back to help on a part-time basis as soon as the new year.

“I won’t be away for too long but that was my last day as a full-time member of staff,” she said.

“I wasn’t expecting that at all. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working here with the pupils, staff and parents.

“I have been lucky I have had good health and laughter is the best medicine I think. This job has given me plenty of that and kept me young at heart.”

Mrs Duncan, who worked at the Northern Scot in 1973 after leaving school, had an award named after her and was invited back to present it.

She was also given cash from a whip round, champagne, flowers, chocolate, afternoon tea out and even a diamond ring.

Head Teacher Faith Sargeant added: “Irene is one of the most generous and kind-hearted people I have ever met.

"She will be truly missed by pupils, parents, staff and the wider community with whom she has spent 30 years building relationships.

"We all wish her the very happiest of retirements and hopes she will enjoy the extra time with her own family.

"We hope she won’t be a stranger and will pop by for a cuppa and a piece every now and again.

"Thank you, Irene, for your dedication, hard work, enthusiasm and service to our school.”
