A PAIR of Elgin friends are hoping a charity race night will help them cross their fund-raising finish line.

Punters are welcome to the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, on Elgin High Street, for the September 2 event, organised by Cara Duncan and Debbie Donaldson for CLIC Sargent.

The VIE at home consultants aim to raise £3,000 for the children’s cancer charity, which offers care and support both during and after treatment, in hospital and at home.

With £2,200 in the kitty, the final push is now on before the duo summit the High Atlas Mountains, in Morocco, for the cause.

"We have been training, but probably not as much as we should," said Debbie (26).

"I go to Curves in Elgin and Cara (20) quite likes her spin classes and she goes running. Over the last few weekends, we’ve been trying to get out on more walks. But Cara did Ben Rinnes last weekend with her granda, and he beat her to the top!"

A trainee financial advisor at Johnston Carmichael, Debbie said both she and Cara are attending the company’s annual charity hike.

"This year it is Lochnagar, which is about a six or seven-hour walk, so we are going to do that on September 4 to get in some last-minute practice," she added.

Although both from Elgin, the trekkers did not know each other until they attended a VIE at Home seminar in Birmingham at the start of the year.

"It was the first time we had met and we decided that day that we were going to do this trek together," said Debbie.

Local businesses who would like to back the effort can join A&I Supplies and DLP Storage in sponsoring a race for £25 ahead of next Friday’s event.

Residents and visitors are welcome along, with tickets costing £3 available either on the door or by contacting Debbie in advance on 07545 832197.

Horses and owners will also be available for purchase, costing £5 and £3 respectively.

Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start and entry for members of the ex-serviceman’s club is free.

Those unable to attend, but who would like to back the cause, can donate online at www.justgiving.com/cara-duncan
