AROUND 50 people turned out to walk at Roseisle Forest in memory of local girl Abbie Main for what would have been her 19th birthday – raising £2200 for her namesake charity.

The Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation walk was held on Sunday, October 17, two days after Abbie's birthday on October 15.

Elgin Academy pupil Abbie passed away, aged 15, on Christmas Day, 2017, after living with Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Her charity gives out "sparkles" to children with cancer across the UK in the form of gifts like toys, grants for specialised equipment and experiences such as holidays.

The youngster’s vision was to raise "money towards hospitals and stuff", put smiles on children’s faces and help their families.

Abbie's mum and charity manager Tammy Main said: "It was heart-warming to see a mix of people, old friends and new, coming together to remember Abbie and celebrate her birthday and her amazing legacy.

"We walked along the Burma Road to Burghead and returned along the beach.

"The weather was surprisingly mild and the even youngsters kept up a good pace, alongside several four-legged friends."

Decorated stones in the shape of an A were laid on the beach as Abbie's Sparkle 19th Birthday Walk ended. The stones were then taken to Abbie’s Sparkle Lodge, at Dalraddy near Aviemore, and arranged in the garden under Abbie’s memorial tree.

Tammy added: "Abbie’s sparkly 'merch' was available on the day, we drew her birthday lucky squares and supporters generously donated, which allowed us to raise over £2200 'towards hospitals and stuff' for children affected by cancer.

"We once again thank our team, our supporters and our fantastic community for making this possible.

"Thank you also to the rangers at Roseisle for their help during our time in the forest – we all had a lovely day."

The charity team has handed out 639 "sparkles" to date.

People can donate to Abbie’s Birthday fundraiser here.

Meanwhile, a fundraising Sparkle Ceilidh is planned for Elgin Town Hall in April.
