SCOTTISH Labour leader Anas Sarwar paid a visit to Moray today ahead of next week's Local Government Elections.

Mr Sarwar campaigned on doorsteps in Elgin with local candidate Sandy Keith before heading through to Lossiemouth to get an update on the construction of the East Beach Bridge.

He also found the time to visit the Mansion House Hotel, John Davidson's Butchers, The Candy Shop, 19 Crepes and Coffee, Spice Tandoori and Qismat.

Speaking to The Northern Scot, Mr Sarwar said: "It's great to be back in area that I've got long and strong ties to.

"My granda moved to Lossie in the 1940s and my mum came here when she was just four years old. I've still got relatives in Lossie and Elgin so there were two reasons for the visit.

"We've got a number of great candidates in Moray. John (Divers, Elgin City South) has a proud record of standing up for his community and I hope we can add to that with other Labour councillors as part of our revival across Scotland.

"There are large parts of the country that feel as if the Labour Party hasn't been as present locally as it should be and I hope people can see we are making an effort to change that."

Sandy Keith, candidate in Elgin City North, added: "Anas is no stranger to Moray, but it's great to have him back.

"He's well regarded locally and the message he is trying to portray is going down well on the streets here."

In Lossiemouth, Mr Sarwar saw the new bridge being constructed. A crane arrived on Sunday to put the bridge together – with the two remaining sections set to arrive tomorrow.

Completion of the bridge will make the East Beach accessible from the esplanade for the first time since 2019.

Mr Sarwar added: "The bridge can't come soon enough. The fact it has been years since people were able to cross and get over to Lossie Beach is completely unacceptable.

"The fact we are moving to get the bridge installed is a massive step forward for the local community. During the pandemic years, people have missed the opportunity to walk to the beach on their doorsteps.

"It's a good opportunity for local businesses, as well, because it will obviously help with tourism."
