Elgin’s Batchen Street closed to traffic as sinkhole opens up





A sinkhole has opened up in the middle of a busy town centre street.

Barriers have been placed around the emerging hole on Batchen Street, one of the busiest streets in Elgin.

The hole was caused by a burst water main.

Scottish Water are currently on site, with workers looking to fix the issue by Saturday, April 26. The road is closed to vehicles for the time being.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: "A mains burst has caused a sinkhole to form on Batchen Street.

“We are aware of the issue and a road closure has been scheduled for this evening to facilitate repairs.

"Completion of repairs is expected on Saturday April 26, and full road access restored.

“We thank customers and road users for their patience."

A Moray Council spokesperson said: “We were made aware of this incident yesterday morning (April 23), and steps were quickly taken to make the area safe.”
