She said: "I'm standing as the local SNP candidate in the upcoming by-election because I want to serve our community and improve the lives of people who live in Elgin City South.

"These are tough times for households in Elgin and it has never been more important to elect a councillor who understands our community and our priorities.

"If elected I'm committed to working hard on the big local issues, such as housing, rejuvenating our town centre, the education of our young people and care for the elderly.

"But I'll also speak up on the big national issues, like fighting the UK Labour Government's cuts to winter fuel payments, which will come as a devastating blow to pensioners in Elgin.

"I look forward to getting out and about between now and polling day to speak with voters and to hear about the issues that matter to them."

“Her firm belief in social justice and fairness comes with a hard work ethic makes her ideal to represent the people of Elgin South.

Richard Lochhead MSP said: “I’m delighted that Laura has been selected.

“She is a good friend and colleague with great experience and knowledge of the issues that matter the most to the people of Elgin South. She will be a strong champion for the ward.”

The following four candidates have confirmed they are standing:

Neil Alexander (Liberal Democrats)
