Cullen Skink World Championships to see ladles at the ready in battle for prestigious titles
It will be ladles at the ready for cooks from near and far as the annual Cullen Skink World Championships draw near.
A range of contestants - ranging from professional chefs through to amateur food enthusiasts - will be putting the final touches to their recipes for the iconic fish dish ahead of the keenly-fought annual competition on March 9.
The Seafield Arms Hotel Grand Ballroom in Cullen will once again host the event, where battle will be joined for two trophies, the Traditional Cullen Skink crown and the title of Cullen Skink with a Twist champion.
Last year saw Aberlour Hotel managing director Kellie Spooner ladle herself a winning portion in both trophies having taken runner-up spot in the Twist section the year previously.
New for the 2024 contest were People’s Choice awards in both sections, with Alison Taylor - also from the Aberlour Hotel - and Kai-Uwe Stutzkeitz from Maybole, Ayrshire claiming the honours in the Traditional and Twist categories respectively.
Organising the annual contest are Discover Cullen.
The group’s chairman, David McCubbin, said: “Aspiring chefs and food enthusiasts, get your ladles ready!
“Home cooks and professional chefs alike are invited to showcase their skills and creative flair in this prestigious competition. Judges will be seeking the perfect balance of flavour, texture and authenticity to crown the next Cullen Skink world champion.
“The competition pits the best Cullen Skink makers against each other with judging undertaken as a blind tasting with the highest score being declared the Cullen Skink World champion. The competition is a wonderful way to celebrate the heritage of Cullen Skink with two trophies up for grabs in the traditional Cullen Skink and Cullen Skink with a twist categories.
“Come along and spectate, try the different competition entries and see if you agree with the judges as to who is the Cullen Skink World Champion in the People’s Choice award.”
The competition is set to run from 11am through to 4pm, with final timings yet to be confirmed at the time of writing.
