Portgordon Fireworks Committee’s three decades of community commitment honoured with special sign

Tribute has been paid to a long-standing community group in the shape of a special sign.

For 30 years between 1992 and 2022 people travelled from miles around to enjoy and marvel at Portgordon Fireworks Committee’s annual display at the village’s harbour.

However, the committee sadly had to fold in 2023 due to a lack of fresh faces willing to come on board.

Three decades of commitment have now been marked by a specially-made sign which has been erected in the fairy walk which runs behind Gordon Street on the old railway line path. The walk is the creation of Fairy Gollachy and Fairy Lennox - aka local men Allan Cowie and Dougie Wilson - and features an ever-expanding selection fairy houses, fairy doors, a seating area and a whole host of magical characters.

Proudly joining this collection now is a sign in honour of the fireworks team. Carved from wood, it features three fireworks and bears the dates during which the committee was operational.

Fireworks committee chairman Kenny Gunn said: “I’d like to thank not only all those involved in making this sign possible but also everyone who assisted or sponsored Porgordon fireworks over 30 years.

“Without their fantastic support, as well as the spectators who came along to the displays in their droves, we could never have had so many displays.

“In 30 years we only ever had three cancellations.

“Monies raised over the years by the committee have been used to support Portgordon groups and should anyone still be interested in rearranging events then we are more than willing to advise you on them.

”The sign is also a wee tribute to our long standing event organiser Adam Robertson who sadly passed away. Thank you all from Portgordon Fireworks Committee.”

With regards to the sign, Mr Gunn voiced special thanks to: Mark Strachan; Allan Cowie and Dougie Wilson; Ian Legge; George Thow; John Wilson; Travis Perkins; Steve Thornton and Neilian (Sign Etch); Les Forman; Billy McKenzie; Brian Reid.

The fairy garden, which first appeared back in January, has spread its wings, so to speak, with Richmond the Rock Snake at the harbour. People are invited to add their own painted stones to the snake.

Keep up to date with developments at both the fairy walk and Richmond the Rock Snake by following the group’s Facebook page.
