St Giles Centre in Elgin firm applies to court for liquidation
Liquidators are set to be called in to wind up the firm behind the now-closed St Giles Centre in Elgin.
Official records confirm that the St Giles Shopping Centre Limited’s sole director, 82-year-old Aviemore businessman David Cameron, applied to have the company wound up on February 28.
Details of a petition requesting the appointment of liquidators were published in the Edinburgh Gazette on Tuesday, March 11.
The petition is currently before Inverness Sheriff Court, with creditors given until Wednesday, March 19 to submit their interests in the company.
Mr Cameron is being represented by Gordon Hollerin of Glasgow law firm Harper Macleod LLP.
The Northern Scot revealed on January 8 that the shopping centre was set to close.
In a statement released that day by Upland Developments Limited, the firm which controls St Giles Shopping Centre Holdings Limited, a spokesperson said the closure came amid “severe financial pressure”.
The company said Moray Council’s support for out-of-town shopping, declining footfall and drop in rental income had also played a role in the decline.
The St Giles Centre closed on January 20, after tenant businesses were given less than two weeks notice.
In November 2025, Moray Council agreed to pursue around £750,000 in unpaid business rates from St Giles Shopping Centre Holdings Limited.
A council meeting in February heard there had been “extensive communications” between the firm and the council over the shopping centre’s growing debt burden and financial difficulties.
The statement also revealed that the attempt to recover debts had been temporarily suspended, as Moray Council discussed “potential redevelopment of the Centre”.
The statement released by Upland Developments Limited said: “St Giles Shopping Centre Holdings Ltd is a standalone entity and the other business interests of the owner are unaffected by this decision.”
Along with St Giles Centre Holdings Limited, Mr Cameron is currently listed on Companies House as a director of 36 companies.
That includes Inverness Caledonian Thistle Properties Limited and ICT Battery Storage Limited, along with around 30 firms related to real estate development.
