St. Sylvester's pupils head to Edinburgh for Holyrood Euroquiz final following Moray win
FOUR pupils from St. Sylvester's School are set to represent Moray at the Euroquiz final in Edinburgh next month.
The pupils, who won the quiz for the Moray region, will head to the Scottish Parliament on June 10 where they will compete against winners from Scotland’s other 31 local authorities.
The dedicated P6 pupils – Katie Flude, Alex Goring, Xavier Thomas and Daniel Hughes – have been meeting after school every Monday since January to prepare for the challenge.
Guided by P3 teacher Nicola Ramsay, the students have studied a wide array of topics from European politics, culture, history, and geography.
Ms Ramsay, who is in her second year at St. Sylvester's after moving from Glasgow, said: "We did a Euro quiz club every week for the team to get them more prepared. We did an hour after school, every Monday, for a good wee while. The heats take place between February and April, and we prepared for a few months before that.
"To have won and be going to the finals is so exciting. Staff from the school in years previous have got to the finals and said it was amazing. The kids are really looking forward to it.”
The preparation involved using a variety of resources, including physical materials from previous years, online quizzes, and educational games to study everything from European mountain ranges and rivers to languages and cuisines. During one of the heats, Katie gained a point by answering a question on French-American film star Timothée Chalamet, while Xavier remembered that the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 due to it being Taylor Swift’s birth year, thanks to his ‘Swiftie’ family.
Ms Ramsay said: “They have learned so much stuff, they’re amazing. I was mind blown by how much they knew, because they study in their own time as well.
"Last year, we came second for Moray, and we were really close. The team worked really hard, and I feel really proud of them to then go on and win it this year. They did amazing and having managed to get the trip to Edinburgh and go to the finals, you can see their confidence—they are feeling proud of themselves."
