LOCAL police have warned cyclists to stay off pavements among general safety reminders this winter.

Community Safety Partnership Inspector Keli McPhail, based at Forres Police Station, this week encouraged people to get on their bikes – but raised some concerns about rider visibility, riders using pavements and drivers failing to give cyclists enough room.

Inspector McPhail said: "As the evenings are getting darker earlier, we would like to give some advice to cyclists to keep themselves safe and to drivers to give them sufficient room.

"In addition, I have had concerns from people walking on the pavements having to make way for cyclists or persons coming up behind them on their bikes without warning, causing them alarm.

"I have been made aware of a number of persons that have been cycling on the pavements where there is no need. I am not talking about young children learning to ride out with their parents – but teenagers and adults who are perfectly capable of cycling on the road and should do so.

"I would encourage cyclists to use your bike as it was intended and not to be on the pavement showing off or going as fast as you can from one destination to the next. That silly moment could have devastating consequences."

Cyclists are reminded that they should have both front and back lights fitted on their bikes, and that a reflective or fluorescent jacket is a wise investment.

Inspector McPhail said: "It is a good idea to have lights fitted anyway as the winter weather can change quite quickly and what was once a clear, sunny day can become foggy with poor visibility.

"The more visible you are, the earlier you are seen, meaning traffic has more time to give you the space you deserve."

She urged drivers to be alert to cyclists on the roads whatever the time of day.

She said: "I would say to drivers that roads can be slippy due to leaves, ice, mud and, as a result, please ensure that you give a cyclist plenty room. Remember that paperboys and girls are out very early, people going to their work are too, so never assume you won’t meet a cyclist on your journey.

"Take your time and give them space."
