Still Game star Jane McCarry helps open River Deveron salmon fishing season
The official opening of the River Deveron salmon season was carried out by Still Game star and comedian Jane McCarry and world casting champion Ian Gordon.
The event at the Turriff Angling Association lodge was organised by The River Deveron District Salmon Fishery Board and The Deveron, Bogie and Isla Rivers Charitable Trust, in association with The Deveron Single Malt Whisky (Bacardi).
Jane McCarry played Isa Drennan in Still Game, while Ian Gordon is a master salmon angler and world Spey casting champion.
The event saw the 2024 Morison Trophy presented to Craig Wyness. He secured the prize by landing a 26lb salmon from Laithers.
A salmon rod from Henderson’s Country Sports (Turriff) was presented to Mr Wyness for carefully releasing the winning fish.
Following the presentation, guests were piped down to the river bank where the opening ceremony was carried out with a dram of Deveron whisky. Mr Wyness then made the first cast of the season.
Jane McCarry is a Bafta award-winning actress and comedian and has worked extensively in both theatre, television and radio throughout the UK.
She is best known for her character Isa in the beloved BBC Scotland sitcom.
Ian Gordon was raised on Deveronside and is a master salmon angler and world Spey casting champion.
He is a pioneer of tackle innovation and a passionate advocate for salmon conservation.
River director Richie Miller said: “The total number of salmon caught from the Deveron by anglers last season was 123 per cent higher than the season before. This improvement was hugely welcome.
“We were delighted that Ian and Jane could join us to get the angling season off to a memorable start.”
