SCORES of Moray cyclists are getting into gear for a charity ride this Sunday organised by Elgin Cycling Club in support of children living with cancer.

So far, around 80 cyclists have signed up for the 100k (62m) or the 50k (31m) rides to raise funds for Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation, an Elgin-based charity which provides treats or "sparkles" to children throughout the UK.

Organisers are urging more riders – at whatever level of competence – to get on board before May 26. The routes are suitable for road, hybrid, commuter or e-bikes.

Both rides will start and finish at Elgin Football Club. The 100km (62-mile) pack will leave Elgin at 9am, sweeping past Pluscarden, Half Davoch and Ferness, before a snack stop in Nairn and back to Elgin. The 50km (31-mile) contingent will leave at 10am for the back roads to Pluscarden, Rafford, Kinloss and back. There will be refreshment stops along the way and at the finish line.

Organisers promise to keep some of the generously donated snacks for the last riders – whatever time they come in. A massage service will be on hand to soothe any worn-out legs.

"This event is not a race – but is a challenge," said Linda Smith, one of the organisers.

"These courses will test both experienced and novice cyclists, but the main aim is to raise money for a great cause while having fun, cycling through fantastic countryside in the company of fellow cyclists."

It is a self-supported event, so entrants are asked to make sure they are equipped with phones, pumps, basic tools and spare tubes. Two back riders will make sure no one is left behind and a support vehicle will tag along.

To enter, visit www.eventbrite.co.uk and search for Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation Charity Cycle 100km or 50km.

Entry costs £10 for the 50km ride, and £15 for the 100km. Any further donations to Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation are welcome. The charity can also be supported through Elgin Cycling Club’s www.virginmoneygiving.com.

Organisers would like to thank the many local businesses who have backed the event, including Calum’s Kitchen, The Deli, Harbour Lights, Harry Gow’s Speyfruit, Bookers Wholesale, Walkers and Deans Shortbread, Tunnocks Ltd, McDonald & Munro Ltd, and sports massage therapists Rachel and Leah of RSC Sports Massage and LWK Sports Massage.
