A PETITION to stop the downgrading of Dr Gray’s Hospital already has over a 1500 signatures - just 12 hours after going online.

It was announced on Wednesday by NHS Grampian that the Elgin hospital’s Special Baby Care Unit will close due to a lack of staff.

About six in 10 mums – those deemed medium of high risk – will now face having to travel to Aberdeen or Inverness to give birth.

The petition says: "We believe NHS Grampian’s decision to downgrade the maternity unit at Dr Gray’s to a midwife only department risks the safety and wellbeing of mothers, their babies and sick children in Moray.

"We urge ministers and MSPs to review NHS Grampian and reconsider sending expectant mothers with medium to high risk pregnancies on long journeys to Aberdeen or Inverness."
