THERE was a surprise in store for a Rotary Elgin duo last week when they turned up to help their leader with a task.

Husband-and-wife members Alistair and Sheila Campbell had arranged to help the club's now former president, Lorna Williamson, write up a project last Wednesday, June 23, only to receive an unexpected accolade.

The two were presented with the Rotary's "Stepping up to the Plate" Award.

Lorna said: "Sheila has been the leader of our communications team and has done a fantastic job with our Facebook posts this year, keeping us in the public eye, even when things were quiet.

"The stories and photos from the archives have been particularly popular with our Facebook followers and as we move into a new Rotary year Sheila will continue her role as communications team lead.

"Alistair has been instrumental in launching the Friends of Rotary Elgin along with our mentoring programme for new members.

"As well as being the team leader for membership, he is also our club archivist, making sure the history of our club is documented for future members to access. It’s thanks to these archives that our past stories have been shared again recently on our Facebook page.

"A shocked Sheila said to me that they were only doing what Rotarians do – and that in itself shows what true Rotarians they are and so well deserving of this award."

The official handover of the club presidency took place on Thursday, July 1, when retired headteacher Ian Brodie took over from Lorna for 2021-22.
