One said: “We were walking down to Lime Kilns when we came across a police car and tape.

“We then heard an explosion which gave us a fright - we guessed that it wasn’t a gunshot. About 15 minutes later we heard another one so cut the walk short. Our dog was very distressed and panicky and we were unsure of what was going on too.

“There should have been more warning.”

Police Scotland confirmed that at around 4.40am on Wednesday, February 12, they received a report of an unexploded ordnance found at an unclassified road near Mundole.

A spokesperson said: “A cordon was put in place. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were contacted and controlled explosions were carried out around midday.”

“There was no wider threat to the public.”
