The annual Highland Cross duathlon has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Co-founder and organising secretary Calum Munro said: "It is with great regret that the organising committee of Highland Cross have to announce that the 2021 event has been cancelled.

"Due to the current situation with the Covid-19 pandemic and the very necessary restrictions that are likely to exist for some time into the future the organisers have concluded that it is unwise to attempt to organise an event of this nature in Highland in June 2021.

"This is a source of huge sadness to us as organisers and will be hugely disappointing to our charity partners and the whole community of Highland Cross who have dedicated themselves and their fundraising efforts to bring help to folk in Highland in need for decades. However before you can look to do good you must ensure that your actions do not cause harm and we have determined that the risk to the Highland community, to the volunteer and supporters team, to those taking part in the event and to the event itself is still too great to stage the event.

"Covid permitting we intend that Highland Cross will return on June 18, 2022 .

"The five charities currently nominated to benefit from Highland Cross 2021 have been offered the opportunity to be the nominated charities for the Highland Cross 2022.

"The participants will be informed and offered the opportunity to maintain their places for the 2022 event.

"This is a heart sore decision but the organisers believe that we must support the Highland community and contribute to maintaining its safety and show respect to those who work to keep the people of Highland safe from this virus. We have been humbled by the messages of support and understanding that we have received from participants, volunteers, supporting organisations and charity partners who have been notified of the cancellation."
