The three beaches are part of an elite group of just 50 beaches across the country awarded the top rating.

The news of Cullen beach’s grading has been met with delight by Aberdeenshire North and Moray East MP Seamus Logan.

He said: "I am delighted but not the least bit surprised to hear that the beach at Cullen in my constituency has been graded one of the best 50 beaches in Scotland by SEPA.

“The environmental agency's Gold Standard Award for Cullen beach's excellent water quality comes just at the right time as tourists enjoy the summer delights of our beautiful coastline in Banffshire.I hope this accolade means that more people will be attracted to the area, which would give a welcome boost to the local economy."

Acting Net Zero Secretary Gillian Martin MSP added: “I am pleased to see a record number of Scotland’s bathing waters rated as ‘excellent’ this year.

“This is testament to our continued investment in protecting and improving bathing waters across the country and targeted work in priority catchments.

"We want to make sure that as many people as possible can enjoy our bathing waters, which is why we continue to work closely with SEPA, Scottish Water and other public partners to protect and improve water quality.

“We encourage everyone to make use of SEPA’s resources and information to help make an informed decision about where and when to bathe.”

A total of 89 beaches have been rated by SEPA for this year, with 50 being graded excellent, 27 good, nine sufficient and three poor.
