THE Conservative Party has announced its two candidates set to stand in Forres in this year's local government election.

Postmaster Paul McBain and vet Kathleen Robertson, both from the town, have been selected to stand in the Forres ward at the election on May 5.

This means current Conservative councillor Claire Feaver will not be standing for re-election.

Speaking after his selection, Paul said: “I’m really excited to be selected as a candidate for the upcoming election.

"I’ve lived in the area most of my adult life and I want to be a voice that helps to protect this beautiful part of the world and enables families to stay and prosper here.

"The Scottish Conservatives can really make a positive difference in leading Moray Council to a more sustainable future.

“My work has always seen me involved in local communities and the day-to-day experiences of residents. With this knowledge and working closely with Kathleen and other colleagues we will champion Forres and Moray.”

Kathleen added: “I’m so pleased to be standing as a candidate for Forres ward.

"My priorities are to protect the distinctive character of Forres and the surrounding smaller communities, support local businesses, and improve attainment levels at our schools.

“While I believe we need a strong Conservative group to drive change at Moray Council and improve services, my decisions will always, first and foremost, be based on local needs and looking at each issue on its merits.”

Labour announced in November that James Hynam, from Kinloss, would be standing for them in the ward.

The SNP are yet to announce a candidate for any ward across Moray and it's unclear which independent councillors will be standing.

Local MP Douglas Ross endorsed both Tory candidates. He said: “I have known both Paul and Kathleen for several years and both are absolutely committed to ensuring the people of Forres and the surrounding areas are well represented.

“Kathleen has a huge range of knowledge about local communities from her work as a vet, as well as through her role on the Community Council and parent associations.

"Paul, a local postmaster, is a well-known face for anyone who visits the High Street post office. Both candidates will make excellent councillors."
