Buckie town centre seating plans in the spotlight at drop-in session

Plans to transform an area of a Moray town square took centre stage at a drop-in consultation session recently.

Buckie North Church hall played host to the event on Tuesday, February 4 which saw local people given the chance to comment on proposals to install distinctive new seating in the north-east quadrant of Cluny Square.

Designed by S4 students at Buckie Community High School, the proposals pay homage to the town’s fishing roots with seating shaped like herring. The existing telescope and information plinth will remain in place.

The project is being taken forward as part of the Buckie Town Centre Improvement Plan.

A spokesperson from Moray Council said: “We’d like to thank everyone who turned up for the in-person consultation at Buckie’s North Church.

“The feedback we received was positive, and we received several strong suggestions for the local phrases that will be inscribed on the seating.

“If you were unable to attend, further information and paper copies of the consultation are available at Buckie Library. Alternatively, an online consultation remains open until Friday, February 21 and can be accessed here: http://www.moray.gov.uk/moray_standard/page_159363.html

Among the views sought by the consultation are on local sayings which could be inscribed into the seats and other street furniture, how they would like the seating to be arranged to enjoy the views across the harbour and encourage social interaction and whether people would like the seating to be used as cycle racks or whether they would prefer it to remain as seating only.

Feedback is also being sought on the designs featured on nearby bollards.

It is expected the new seating will be installed by June this year.
