Tributes paid to victims of fatal car crash on A98 near Buckie
Tributes have been paid to the victims of a fatal car crash.
A section of the A98 between Buckie and Fochabers was closed during Tuesday, June 10 following a two-car crash between a Vauxhall Insignia and a Peugeot 2008 at around 12.30pm.
The 32-year-old female driver of the Vauxhall and the 77-year-old passenger of the Peugeot - believed to be Janet Cowie, the wife of former Buckie councillor Gordon Cowie - were pronounced dead at the scene.
A 77-year-old man - thought to be Mr Cowie - was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Buckie councillor Sonya Warren said her thoughts were with all those involved in the accident.
She continued: “This is a deeply tragic incident and my heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives.
“I know the whole community will be shocked and saddened by this awful news.
“I would also like to thank the emergency services who responded so quickly and professionally in such harrowing circumstance.
“My thoughts remain with everyone affected, especially the gentleman who remains in hospital, and I know Buckie and the surrounding area will be holding all involved in their hearts at this very difficult time.”
Joining her was fellow ward member Councillor John Stuart.
He said: “Sadly, earlier this week the community of Buckie was served another tragic reminder that sometimes not everyone comes home when out and about on our roads.
“My thoughts are with previous ward councillor, Gordon Cowie, and his family with the sad loss of his wife.
“Additionally, my thoughts are with the family of the driver who lost their life.
“Too many lives are lost on our roads.”
Among his community work Mr Cowie serves as a trustee and the vice-chair of the Fishermen’s Hall in Buckie.
A message on the hall’s Facebook page read: “It is with deep sadness we send our condolences to our trustee Gordon Cowie and his family at this terrible time.
“Our thoughts, love and prayers are with you all.”
Buckie Thistle also sent their condolences via the club Facebook page.
“Buckie Thistle Football Club were saddened to learn of the tragic accident involving Gordon Cowie and his wife Janet.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family at this very difficult time.”
