A TELEVISION appearance last week has provided a "big boost" to Johnstons of Elgin.

The woollen mill, which employs 650 people locally, featured on ITV4's Made in Britain on Thursday night.

Johnstons' chairman Jenny Urquhart said appearing on the box has given the company a lift in more ways than one.

"We have a special community at Johnstons, so it has given everybody a big boost through a difficult year," Ms Urquhart said.

"We take great pride in what we do, we have very high-skilled staff and it was great to see that celebrated on television.

"Plus, Johnstons will be seen by people who have never heard of us.

"It's a new platform – we have never had a documentary done on us before so it's showing us in a difficult light.

"We hope this will increase brand awareness. At a time when we can't offer tours, it's good to be able to open up to a wider audience like this.

"We have had a great reaction to the programme."

Filming on Made in Britain was done by a crew of just two in December, before stricter lockdown rules were enforced across Scotland.

It goes behind the scenes at Johnstons – showing the company's production process in detail.

As well as showing the processes at the Elgin mill, the programme also touches on Hawick – where Johnstons has its second Scottish woollen mill.

However, Johnstons wasn't the only company touched upon during the one-hour show.

Ms Urquhart added: "It was fascinating to see what other British manufacturers are doing.

"We can learn so much from understanding how other businesses work.

"There are loads of episodes so I'm definitely putting Made in Britain on my list of programmes to watch."

Johnstons is the first manufacturer mentioned on the programme, with the appearance lasting around 15 minutes.
