RAF Lossiemouth unsung heroes supporting Eurofighter Typhoon pilots on NATO mission feature on The Fighter Show on YouTube
UNSUNG heroes supporting top guns from RAF Lossiemouth feature on the latest episode of the world’s only YouTube channel devoted to the Eurofighter typhoon fast jet.
Six RAF Typhoons from the RAF’s IX (Bomber) squadron are taking part in a four-month mission at the Mihail Kogalniceanu (MK) Air Base in Constanta, Romania.
They are part of NATO’s enhanced Air Policing mission and show host Show host, Flo Taitsch gets the lowdown from the essential, but less well-known roles at MK, Constanta.
From the physiotherapist and physical training instructor to an armourer, each of them explains the part they play in helping the squadron protect NATO’s Eastern Flank. You can watch the show at The Fighter Show, the series from Eurofighter Typhoon.
There are around 200 RAF personnel from 140 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW), flying alongside their Romanian counterparts at MK. The base also has personnel from the US, France, Netherlands, Belgium and Finland all supporting the mission.
Detachment Commander of the RAF, Wing Commander Karl Bird, who is based at MK, said: “Our main duty here is to protect the Eastern Flank of NATO, conducting enhanced air policing in support of NATO and its partners, as well as the air shielding activities.”
Flo spoke to the RAF team during their five-month deployment at MK from March to August, with physical training Instructor ‘Jacko’ identified in the episode for his essential morale-boosting activities for the team, including taking trips up to Transylvania: canoeing, kayaking or walking.

Flo said: “The beach at the Black Sea looks like a holiday resort, but looks can be deceptive. there’s a war around, so Constanta is a very interesting place to be. We were invited to the Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base by the Royal Air Force which is in Constanta with the Eurofighter Typhoon, shielding the skies over Romania.”
