THE upper levels of the St Giles Centre Car Park in Elgin have been closed on public safety grounds.

More than half of the car park's storeys – level three to six – will remain closed "until a future plan for the structure is known", Moray Council said.

The upper levels of St Giles Centre Car Park will remain closed until further notice.

The levels were closed after specialist contractors undertook investigative work and discovered structural defects affecting the integrity of the concert supports.

Levels one and two are unaffected, where there are 93 spaces available.

Blue badge holders can park free of charge in any space. However, there is no step-free access to the centre from levels one or two.

Alternative parking is also available at North Port, including 10 spaces for blue badge holders, and Ladyhill Road.

Moray Council’s transportation manager Nicola Moss said: “We have a duty to ensure the safety of the public and this closure is in response to those obligations.

“We acted swiftly to reduce the risk and don’t foresee the upper levels of the car park re-opening until a future plan for the structure is known.

"We’ll review the blue badge spaces and advise the public of any further changes to access to these spaces.

“We apologise to drivers for any inconvenience caused.”
