Scotmid submits plans to Moray Council seeking to transform Burghead Parish Church building into supermarket

A church building which has remained empty for over a year could be transformed into a supermarket under plans recently submitted to Moray Council.

Burghead Parish Church was closed by the Church of Scotland as part of cost saving measures on December 31, 2023.

The former church building could soon become a food convenience store.

However, Scotmid is proposing to convert the former church building into a food convenience store.

The retailer already has a presence in the town but if plans are consented the firm will move from its existing premises to the new site.

It says that doing so will offer shoppers a more “accessible and spacious site” which will better serve the local community.

Karen Scott, Scotmid chief executive, said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to further invest in Moray, a key trading area for Scotmid.

“As a co-operative, we are committed to serving and supporting local communities and this project in Burghead reflects that commitment.

“By relocating to a more accessible and spacious site, we will be able to enhance the shopping experience for our customers, while preserving the character of this historic building.

“We also look forward to creating additional local jobs and continuing our long-standing tradition of providing quality retail services at the heart of the community."

Scotmid says that developing the new store will allow the firm to offer a wider product range and improved facilities in the town.

It adds that it will engage with the local community throughout the process and will share updates as plans progress.
