Wildlife in Moray: A Robin Reliant

.

Ian MacKay sent us this photo yesterday evening.

He says: "The robin was perched on my wing mirror while I was parked at the Alice Littler Park in Aberlour."

Robins within the UK and northern France are relatively unafraid of people.

This attitude appears linked to the traditional association of their red breasts with the blood of Christ, which meant they were never harmed.

By contrast, across continental Europe where, along with most other small birds, they were hunted and killed, robins are more wary.

The species is often drawn to gardens as recently-dug soil provides them with a ready supply of earthworms and other food.

When young they have high mortality rates, especially during cold winters.

However if they survive their first year they can live a long time.

One particular bird, in 2015, was recorded as 19 years-old.

That same year the robin was once again voted Britain's favourite bird, taking 34% of the final vote.
