Poundland set for return to Elgin High Street with winter opening date

The wait for a major retailer’s return to its permanent home on Elgin High Street could soon be over.

Poundland has been operating out of a temporary base next to the town’s TK Maxx store since a fire in August 2022.

It had originally leased the site of the former Woolworths store on the High Street until the building was forced to close in May 2018 after serious problems were identified with its roof.

The bargain retailer then bought it outright, making it the only one amongst its 850 stores in the UK and Ireland which it owns rather than rents.

A painstaking restoration project of the B-listed building, which will see Poundland move into the ground floor with apartments above, is now close to completion after six years of complicated work and unexpected delays including the coronavirus pandemic.

There were hopes that the store could open this summer but problems with the building warrant pushed the opening date back further.

It is now understood, however, that if there are no further delays the store will officially open on Saturday, December 7.
