Moray Leisure Centre ice rink campaigners praised by politicians Graham Leadbitter, Douglas Ross, Richard Lochhead and Tim Eagle

Moray’s politicians have reacted positively to the news that the region’s ice rink has been saved.

MPs Graham Leadbitter and Douglas Ross, as well as MSPs Richard Lochhead and Tim Eagle were delighted to hear that, following a community campaign, Elgin Ice Rink - shut on August 4 over spiralling energy costs - will re-open on Sunday, October 5.

Mr Leadbitter (SNP, Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey) said credit goes to the Rink Joint User Group who campaigned tirelessly for the outcome.

He said: “Their efforts to save this much-loved and well-used facility have been inspiring. They also brought to light just how important the rink is to the community.”

Mr Leadbitter believes the threat of closure also highlighted the excessive cost of energy in the area.

“This is a region that produces excess clean energy,” he said, “with many generating it from their own homes. Yet people and businesses here face some of the highest energy bills in the world.

“I’ll continue to fight for a better energy deal and policies like a Highland Energy Rebate which will put money back into pockets here."

Local clubs had been forced to travel to Inverness to use a rink but a partnership has been struck with management, staff and the board of the leisure centre to create a new operating model. Six jobs have been saved.

Mr Ross (Conservative, Highlands and Islands) backs the changes to ‘generate more income’.

He said: “This is brilliant news. The shutting of the ice rink was a hammer blow to local clubs, athletes and the community right across Moray. Generations have trained here, many going on to enjoy success further afield.

“This decision must herald a bright future for the ice rink to ensure this facility can continue to bring great benefits to people of all ages.”

“Operational improvements will generate more income. These include a new three-tier skate pass, to provide options for casual skaters, regular users and families. Also, an updated pricing structure.

Since the initial plans for closure were announced, Mr Lochhead (SNP, Moray) has worked with all involved to find solutions.

He said: “We wanted to support Moray Leisure Centre to move onto a cheaper energy tariff. I hope the board and the users can continue to work together to ensure a sustainable and long term future.”

The rink at Borough Briggs Road, Elgin, will continue to offer skating, curling and hockey.

Mr Eagle (Conservative, Highlands and Islands) said: "Congratulations to the board of MLC on their decision. It's really heartening to see this positive response to the strong public reaction to the original announcement.

"We will need to examine Moray Leisure Centre’s proposals in detail, as it is important to provide a solid and sustainable basis for operating the rink for the longer term. This will require continued input from rink-users and the wider community and, possibly, funding from third parties.”

He finished: “There should be a role for the Scottish Government, given the importance of the ice rink to a national sport like curling. I will continue to press ministers over the matter."
