Effort and attainment rewarded at Milne’s High School prizegiving
STUDENTS, staff and family members came together to celebrate a year of success when Milne’s High School held their annual prizegiving.
Achievements in the classroom, sports field and the wider community were all honoured at the event, which was held in Fochabers Public Institute.
It was an evening to remember for Calum Macpherson who was presented with the Sir Ashley Mackintosh Medal as Dux of the school.
The guest speaker at the prizegiving is something of a high flier - quite literally. Getting a warm Milne’s welcome was former student Felix Lilleyman who is now first officer co-pilot at Bristow Helicopters.
In her keynote address, rector Jemma Playfair said she was “immensely proud” of what had been achieved at Milne’s during the school year and that it was a “difficult task” to sum up how good it had been.
She went on to focus on the central role played by the school’s three core principles - resilience, respect and responsibility.
She continued: “I firmly believe that exam results do not define a young person.
“School is so much more than a young person’s attainment, however, it is always great to see how happy some of our young people are on exam results day.
“This year we had new records of young people getting six As at National 5 and an increased number of young people gaining level six awards (equivalent to a Higher grade).
“That being said, I am mostly proud of our positive leaver’s destination figure at Milne’s High School. This year we have 97 per cent of our young people moving onto a positive and sustained destination. This is down to parents/carers, staff and the young people all working together to get it right.
“This is something that really fills my bucket as a head teacher seeing our young people leave school happy and ready to move onto their next adventure in life.”
She went on to highlight the recent rip to Tanzania and the beginning of a new link between Milne’s and the African nation.
Concluding, Mrs Playfair added: “Milne’s High School is more than just a school, it is a community that is committed to ensuring each and every young person gets the best experience throughout their school years.
“We are at a point, where despite the challenges we face in Scottish education, we do have lots to look forward to next session.
“I am positive that with our committed pupils, dedicated staff and supportive school community Milne’s High School will continue to go from strength to strength next session.“
