The five-year-old has developed a passion for litter and ensuring it does not blight the streets of Elgin.

The Linkwood Primary School pupil is a member of the Positive Action Group (PAG) on Facebook with his mum Susan.

That has brought community-minded people together to take part in regular litter picks across the town.

The youngster is one of the most enthusiastic members and recently picked up no fewer than 50 bags of litter in the space of just five days.

“We have always picked up rubbish when we are out a dog walk,” said Susan.

Mother and son joined the PAG and started participating in the Sunday litter picks.

Zayne was already very environmentally-aware and is passionate about recycling.

And he immediately got hooked on litter picking after joining the group.

During the first week of the Easter holidays, Zayne set himself a challenge to collect 50 bags of rubbish in the area of Linkwood and Reiket Lane.

And in five days he had scooped up a huge amount of litter and, with his mum’s help, had disposed of it at the local waste centre at Moycroft.

“I am immensely proud of him,” said Susan. “There was one day it was so wet we were soaked through but he was happy to keep picking litter.

“The Moray Council staff at the waste depot were great with Zayne when he turned up in his own high viz vest with the rubbish.

“There were three council workers who were great with him and told him he could be their boss.”

Zayne now wants to be a binman after his experience.

Susan paid tribute to the PAG members who have been very supportive.

“It is a fantastic group and more and more people are joining all the time,” she said.

“It is like a community and people go online for a chat and to support each other.”

Rhian Russell, one of the founders of the PAG, said: “Seeing what Zayne and his mum do together is amazing.

“He is a little ray of sunshine during these dark times and his positivity and determination is inspiring to us all!”
