Elgin Amateur Athletics Club win 25 medals at North Area Trophy in Inverness as young athletes help smash five championship records
Elgin Amateur Athletics Club enjoyed huge success at the North Area Trophy meeting in Inverness.
Helping the club win 25 medals and break a string of records were some of the club’s younger athletes making a name for themselves for the first time at regional level.
The event brought the curtain down on the outdoor season and club chair Dawn Cruickshank said: “We were met with sun, smiley faces and the infectious Elgin team spirit.”
She said three new members were added to the club’s competitive roster of 18, contributing to some “incredible” performances in the Highland capital.
The overall record shows that Elgin AAC won 25 medals including 12 gold, their athletes managed 30 personal best performances and broke five championship records. One also broke a club record.
While more established athletes like Tom Palmer, Lexi Grant, Ava Cruickshank and Lauren Abbott featured regularly on the podiums, so too did emerging young talents like under-11 star Dylan Warner and under-13 prodigy Erin Rigg.
Warner claimed three bronze medals and three personal bests in the 100 metres, 200 metres and long jump.
There were more under-11 PBs for Edith Sharp in the same three events and Isla Harrison in the two sprint races.
Rigg took gold in the U13 70m hurdles and bronze in the 200m with two PBs as well as taking silver in the long jump.
Olivia Hale produced a stunning performance in the 1200m, beating not only her own best but the championship record to win the race.
Erin Young won bronze in the shot put with one of three PBs, also beating her best in the 100m and 200m.
There were personal bests for fellow under-13s Abigail Scott in the 100m and shot put, Charlotte Hirst in the shot put, Romina Rowe in the shot put and Toby Laker in the 100m and shot put.
A triple medal winner in the under-15s was Quentin Fowlie, who took silver in the shot put (8.96m) and bronze in the 100m (PB) and 200m.
Another under-15, Caitlin Cooper beat her own best in the 100m heat, then again in the final and also in the 200m heats.
Andrew Lumsden continued his fine year in the under-17s, winning silver in both the 100m and javelin with two PBs.
A double gold winner was Ava Cruickshank, who claimed a new club record with a shot put throw of 10.24m for gold, and another victory in the javelin (16.32m).
Matching Ava’s medal haul was Lauren Abbott, winning both the 100 and 300 metres races.
One of the performances of the meeting came from Lexi Grant, who smashed two championship records in the 100m hurdles (a PB of 16.25) and long jump, as well as claiming bronze in the triple jump.
Elgin AAC’s two senior athletes collectively won four gold medals and a silver.
Tom Palmer took three of those, winning the 800m and 110m hurdles and finishing second in the 200m.
Tamsin Fowlie was another to break two championship records for PBs and gold medals in the 200 and 400 metres.
