Elgin Boys’ Club, which produced star footballers like Nicky Walker, Alan Main and Steve Paterson, celebrates 60th year with awards night
Elgin Boys’ Club’s 60th year of youth football has been celebrated at their prizegiving evening.
Founded in 1964 - the first-ever match was kicked off by Elgin City legend Willie Grant - the club has nurtured the talents of young footballers who went on to play at the highest level.
But the principle aim has always been to give a platform for boys and girls - the female players were introduced in recent years - to develop their skills and play in a sporting manner.
The last milestone for the club, their 50th celebration in 2014, saw former Scotland goalkeepers Nicky Walker and Alan Main face each other in a former players match at the club’s Morriston playing fields.
This year, Elgin Boys’ sent a junior squad into action against Dyce, Keith and Turriff youth teams in a special 60th celebration tourney.
At Elgin Town Hall, the awards night saw Tyler Begg (Corinthians juniors), Oliver Foster (St Andrews intermediates) and Caleb Glew (Crusaders seniors) claim the player of the year awards at the three age groups.
The goalkeeper of the year awards, presented in memory of long-standing club stalwart Mike Christie, went to Harrison Macgillivray (St Columba’s juniors), Matthew Simpson (St Columba’s intermediates) and Antony Lewis (Corinthians seniors).
Saracens, coached by former Elgin City and Highland League stars Steven Rattray and Ryan Green, won the seniors’ Summer Cup final at Borough Briggs with a 3-2 success over St Columba’s.
Crusaders won the senior league, coached by Kiegis Henderson and Colin Morrison while Corinthians claimed the league cup for their coaches, Michael Dunn and Steve Borzoni.
In the intermediates, St Andrews were the dominant force as they won the league and defeated St Columba’s 5-3 in the Borough Briggs cup final, led by coaches Ryan Main and Rhys Jones.
