Buckie handed Shire cup rematch

THE William Hill Scottish Cup second round draw has paired Buckie Thistle with a rematch against East Stirling, the team they knocked out last season.

Shire were kicked out of the competition for fielding an ineligible player in their 1-0 win over Jags at Ochilview in January’s fourth round tie.

Now they are set to meet again, once more on the plastic pitch at Ochilview, in a tie set to go ahead on Sunday, October 23 because Stenhousemuir are playing a league game there on the Saturday.

Elgin City will meet Highland League opponents for the third season running as they face a tricky trip to take on Fraserburgh.

Ross Jack’s Third Division side have beaten Brora Rangers and Nairn County in the past two seasons.

Keith’s reward for defeating St Cuthbert Wanderers last Saturday is an away tie against Wick Academy in one of two all-Highland League ties coming out of the hat.

Huntly are at home to Third Division Queens Park, while if Forres Mechanics can overcome Irvine Meadow in this weekend’s replay in Ayrshire, they will visit Edinburgh City in round two.

But it is Buckie’s tie which will capture the most imagination after the controversy which followed last season’s meeting.

Gregg Carrol’s side thought they were out of the cup when Shire netted a late winner in a match which saw Buckie striker Ian Murray sent off for fighting with team-mate Graeme Stewart.

However, it emerged that their goalkeeper Michael Andrews, who was on loan from Falkirk, was not eligible to play in the tie because his paperwork had not been completed before the signing deadline.

Jags were automatically handed a place in the last 16, where they lost at home to Brechin in an all-ticket match at Victoria Park.
