BUCKIE Thistle battled bravely before being beaten 5-2 by Dundee United in a crazy League Cup match at Victoria Park.
Kristijan Trapanovski and Kevin Holt both grabbed doubles for United, with David Babunski also adding his name to the scoresheet. Jack MacIver and defender Joe McCabe grabbed the home side's goals.
The Jags were under the cosh at the start, with North Macedonian winger Kristijan Trapanovski’s effort from inside the box deflected over the bar.
But Buckie belied the four-league gap between the sides for the remainder of the opening 20 minutes - until Trapanovski broke the offside trap when played through by Louis Moult and slotted into the bottom right-hand corner.
Lyall Keir had the Jags’ first effort a minute later, but only the half hour mark the visitors doubled their advantage.
Kai Fotheringham broke the offside trap and was fouled in the box by a desperate Joe McCabe challenge. Kevin Holt stepped up to slide the ball into the bottom corner.
Buckie were back in the match three minutes after half-time when Joe McCabe rose highest and nodded a Jack MacIver corner home at the near post.
But United's two-goal advantage was restored when Vicko Sevej's cross was turned in at the back post by Trapanovski.
Innes McKay's misplaced header allowed Fotheringham in on the hour mark, but he could only slip the ball a yard wide. David Babunski, though, made no when he twisted and turned in the box before slotting in United's fourth.
Buckie almost pulled one back when MacIver got in behind - but his lobbed effort was palmed away and behind by United keeper David Richards.
The Jags had a second goal of the night to celebrate when Sam Pugh went down in the box from the resultant corner. Vicko Sevej was booked and MacIver stepped up to hammer the penalty home into the left-hand side of the net for 4-2.
Substitute Josh Peters' low drive from the edge of the box almost made it 4-3, but Richards tipped his effort behind.
The game was finally put beyond doubt on 75 minutes, although Buckie were furious at the award of a penalty against Ridgers, who was adjudged by referee Calum Scott to have fouled William Ferry.
Kevin Holt stepped up to fire his second and United's fifth into the bottom right-hand corner.
Buckie’s final League Cup match takes place on Saturday against Ayr United at Somerset Park.
