"WE WERE rubbish," admitted a disappointed and frustrated Elgin City manager Ross Jack after watching his side knocked off the top of the Irn Bru Third Divsion with a 3-0 defeat at home to Clyde.

After hitting the top of the league for the first time in 12 years, City saw a bumper crowd of 728 make their way to Borough Briggs.

And despite a promising start when Brian Cameron came close to opening the scoring after just 30 seconds, City played second fiddle to Jim Duffy's side for most of the 90 minutes.

A first half double from the lively Liam Cusack (12) and (26), put the visitors in command at the interval.

And they cruised to the points after the break when John Neil chested home a third (67).

City struggled to get out of second gear and Stuart Leslie blasted a late effort high over the bar to sum up a disappointing afternoon for the Black and Whites.

Jack admitted: "We never got going and never got into our stride at all.

"We didn't get on the front foot like we did last week at Peterhead.

"There was a good crowd there today and we let them down badly with the way we played.

"The boys had worked so hard to get to the top of the league but it is ever harder now to stay there.

"We can't have below par performances like that when we have a good crowd at home.

"I thought Clyde's first goal was against the run of play but to lose two goals the way we did was disappointing.

"We have got to learn from this and be big and strong. We have ambitions to get out of this league.

"No disrepect to Clyde, who thoroughly deserved their win, but we have got to be beating teams like that at home."

Elgin skipper Paul Kaczan apologised to the City fans for his own and the team's performance.

"It was a frustrating day and we just didn't get going," he said.

"That was probably my worst performance in an Elgin shirt for about five years and I would like to say sorry to all the fans that turned up.

"Hopefully they will stick by us and come back again.

"I don't think anybody got caught up in the excitement of being top but the game just seemed to pass us by.

"We will have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and get going again next weekend at Stranraer."
