Elgin Amateur Athletics Club shines at North District Championships in Inverness with 12 medals and a string of personal best performances





A host of podium places and personal bests.

That was the result for Elgin Amateur Athletics Club, who claimed 12 medals at North District Championships in Inverness.

The club sent 11 athletes to the Highland capital and returned east with three gold, five silver and four bronze gongs, as well as a string of best-yet performances.

One of the club’s stars was under-15 boys competitor Quentin Fowlie who took three medals.

He qualifying for the 200 metres and ran a personal best of 27.35 seconds to win silver, then reached the 100m final where he again finished second in 13.17. The best was saved for last with a 10.36 metre PB in the shot put and a gold medal.

Erin Rigg was a double golden girl in the under-13s with a PB in her long jump of 4.39 and a time in 70m hurdles of 13.12.

Also in the youngest girls’ group, Kirsty Urquhart claimed bronze in the high jump with her best leap yet of 1.10m. She narrowly missed out on another medal with a javelin throw of 11.20m.

Romina Rowe also won a bronze medal, with a personal best shot put throw of 5.74m and another PB in the 200m (33.34sec)

Charlotte Hirst was a mere 0.05sec off her PB in 800m (2:51.20) while Abigail Scott ran a PB in her 200m with a time of 33.40, then went on to run the 800m with a time of 3:17.04. She finished off her weekend jumping a PB of 3.70m in the long jump.

In the under-15 boys, Toby Laker qualified for the 200m final with a time of 30.72 and went on to win a bronze medal in javelin with a throw of 16.48m.

Donald Coull ran a PB of 13.66 in the 100m to make the final, bettering his best (13.56) in the final to finish fourth. He then threw a PB in the shot put (9.12m) and long jump (5.00m) to clinch two silver medals for his club.

A star performer in the under-15 girls was Erin Young, who qualified for the 200m (29.76) and ran faster in a tough final. She then threw a PB of 11.05m for a silver in the javelin and ran a blistering 46.96 for bronze in the 300m.

There were some tough heats for Caitlin Smith, who qualified for the 100m final with a time of 14.58, then ran faster in the final with a time of 14.48.

She narrowly missed out on a medal in the 300m with a PB time of 46.19 and jumped a PB in the long jump (3.63m).
