Buckie Ladies in seven heaven as crunch league finale beckons

Buckie Ladies’ charge for the Highlands and Islands League title continued on Sunday with a convincing win.

The visit of Caithness marked the side’s last home game of the year and they signed off with a stylish 7-1 victory over the Highlanders.

Alicia Paterson’s bullet header from a corner set the hosts on their way, with Lori Lappin’s screamer from outside the 18 yard box doubling Buckie’s advantage. The visitors made it 2-1 after being awarded a penalty although it was not to last, neat link-up play with Skye Milne seeing Paterson claim her second of the game.

After the restart, Lappin was again the provider, this time for Jess Moore, who went on to score a brace, these goals book-ending strikes from Abbie Marshall and Olivia Wood.

Buckie Ladies manager Laura Duncan said: “I’m delighted, it was an excellent team performance all round.

“We worked well as a team and dominated play for most of the game. Caithness are a good side and we were expecting a tough game, so to get a result like this, especially before a cup final, is excellent.

“Every single goal we scored was a peach. We were clinical and took our chances, which is something I hope we repeat on Saturday.

“The conditions weren't too bad - the wind picked up for a while before dying down, we’ve played in worse, to be honest.”

A crunch, winner-takes-all clash away to Ross County awaits on September 29, with Buckie having the bragging rights so far for this season with a 7-0 home win against the Dingwall side. County currently sit top on 21 points with the Grant Park outfit hot on their heels with 21 points. Should the pair draw Sutherland - currently on 19 points - could sneak the trophy from under their noses should they emerge victorious at home against Caithness.

Next up, though, is a trip to King George V Park in Golspie this Saturday and the small matter of the Highlands and Islands Cup final against Sutherland. Kick-off is scheduled for 2.30pm and a small number of seats are still available on the supporters’ bus - message the club Facebook page to reserve a place.
