Dundee 1 Elgin City 2: City defeat Championship side in cup

By Jonathan Clark

ELGIN City defeated Championship side Dundee 2-1 at Dens Park to progress to the round of 16 of the Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup.

Dundee, who were playing Premiership football last season, took the lead but City fought back in the second half to record a memorable success in the city of discovery.

Given Dundee were coming off the back of a 6-2 thrashing from city rivals Dundee United last weekend, Elgin manager Gavin Price feared a backlash - but instead his side heaped yet more misery on James McPake's team.

Elgin made one change to the team which fought back from behind to rescue a 3-3 draw with Edinburgh City at Borough Briggs last weekend, with Matthew Cooper coming in for Rory MacEwan.

It was Dundee that took the lead on 18 minutes through a 25 yard effort from right-back Cammy Kerr. The Dee went into the break with their advantage intact, despite a headed effort from Matthew Cooper being tipped over by goalkeeper Calum Ferrie and Rabin Omar's shot deflecting wide.

There was chances at both ends at the start of the second half, but Elgin stunned the home crowd when they levelled the scores on 55 minutes through Rabin Omar. The midfielder rattled a strike into the top right hand corner from inside the area.

And as the Dee support was recovering from that blow, they were hit with another. Sean Mackie's back-pass was short and keeper Ferrie clattered Kane Hester as he attempted to clear it - the ball then broke for Shane Sutherland to stroke it into an empty net from all of 30 yards.

To make matters better still for Elgin, Ferrie was sent off for his foul on Hester, leaving the hosts more than 30 minutes to play with 10 men.

Dundee created chances after going behind, but failed to break down the barrier City put up with their man advantage.

Elgin, then, progress to the next round of the Challenge Cup after one of the biggest results in recent years. The round of 16 draw will take place on Tuesday at 12:30pm.
