City defeated a young Dundee United B team 1-0 thanks to Kane Hester's second half strike.

Elgin started sharply with Hester adjudged offside as he rounded keeper Ruairidh Adamson three minutes.

Angus Mailer forced Adams to palm away from under his bar, then Brian Cameron dispossessed a defender to slot in Hester, who dragged his shot just wide of the target.

United took time to settle but soon showed their class, with captain Archie Meekison testing Tom McHale with a free kick then releasing Chris Mochrie, who fired straight at McHale.

Raith Rovers loan defender Greig Young was making his BoroughBriggs debut for City and he went close with a back post header midway through the first half.

Hester then forced an Adams save from a Russell Dingwall free kick.

Two minutes later Mochrie, currently on loan at Dunfermline Athletic, played through a superb pass to send Miller Thomson through but he slid the ball wide with just McHale to beat.

Hester struck an angled effort into the body of Adams at his near post on 27 minutes.

McHale was called into action to block a close range effort by Rory MacLeod following a slack pass in the home defence.

Mochrie then bundled wide after Thomson outpaced the City defence and played across the six yard box.

Right on the break, Dingwall almost caught out keeper Adams after curing in from the right and shooting, his effort pushed wide by the United number one.

City manager Gavin Price made a half time change, bringing Jevan Anderson on for Owen Cairns.

Even with United having a spell of pressure, a home goal broke the deadlock on 61 minutes.

Passes between Dingwall and Mailer and a neat Brian Cameron flick located Hester in space in the box and he did the rest with a neat finish past Adams.

On came Dundee loan winger Tom Findlay and summer signing Chris Antoniazzi to freshen up Elgin’s attacking options.

It needed a superb saving tackle from half time sub Anderson to deny Kai Fotheringham a clear run on goal on 72 minutes.

City finished the game strongly and booked a home tie against Stenhousemuir in round two.
